The Department of Restorative Dentistry was created July 01, 1994 as a result of an amalgamation of the departments of Endodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry. The previous departments were discipline based and had a long history of clinical and didactic activities designed to focus, support and promote their respective disciplines. The departments of Removable Prosthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics and Endodontics each developed and maintained separate postgraduate programs. The Fixed and Removable Prosthodontic postgraduate programs were later combined into a single unified Prosthodontic Postgraduate program as mandated by the American Dental Association.

Today the Department of Restorative Dentistry has the responsibility of providing the didactic, preclinical and clinical teaching to undergraduate predoctoral program, as well as maintaining accredited postgraduate programs in Endodontics and Prosthodontics. In addition, many of the faculty have active research programs and participate in the State University of New York clinical practice management plan.
