The combined D.D.S./Ph.D. Program requires 8 years to complete. Students ideally apply prior to matriculation in dental school. During the first and second years, students take graduate school courses and some basic science dental school courses as well as complete the preliminary exam requirement for the Ph.D. During the third- six years they are enrolled in the dental school curriculum while conducting limited Ph.D. research. After completion of the D.D.S. requirements, they are engaged exclusively in their Ph.D.dissertation research until requirements are satisfied (approximately two years).
Students selected for the combined degree may be supported by the university's Moore Fellowship or by a National Institutes of Health Research and Oral Biology Training Grant. Students are formally evaluated in relation to academic and research performances at the end of each year. To maintain in the program, students must maintain at least a "B" average in both dental school and graduate school courses.
