M.S. and Certificate, Orthodontics

The Department of Orthodontics offers an Advanced Education program in which students simultaneously complete both a Certificate in a clinical training program and a Master of Science degree. In order to successfully complete the program a student must earn at least 30 graduate credit hours, write and defend a thesis, and be in residence in the department for at least 36 months.  The Masters program aims to stimulate research in orthodontics as well as in such related basic sciences as anatomy, histology, and physiology. It has the additional objective of training people who can serve orthodontics in teaching and research. A typical program consists of four oral science offerings in addition to the following courses; Craniofacial Growth, Biostatistical Techniques, Research Methodology, Anatomy and Physiology, Masticatory System, Dynamics of Bone, Communicative Disorders Related to Cleft palate, Orthodontic Research, Advanced Human Dissection, and Thesis Guidance.

Student research is best illustrated by a list of recent thesis titles; they include "Leukotriene B4 Effect on Tissue-Plasminogen Activator production in Osteoblastic Osteosarcoma Cells," " Effects of Premolar Extraction on the Facial Profile of American Blacks and Caucasians," "Effects of Slow Maxillary Expansion on Mandibular Arch Width," "Effects of Aspirin on Orthodontic Tooth Movement," and "The Effectiveness of Three Orthodontic Retention Systems: A Short-Term Clinical Study."

All entering students must possess either a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree or the foreign equivalent. Admission to the program is extremely competitive.

No funding is available.
